A Los Angeles police detective has been charged with premeditated murder in connection with the beating and stabbing death of her ex-boyfriend’s wife more than two decades ago.
The capital murder charge means that Stephanie Lazarus, 49, could face the death penalty. Lazarus is accused of killing Sherri Rae Rasmussen in her Van Nuys condo in 1986.
Detectives recently reopened the cold case and learned through DNA analysis that Rasmussen was killed by a woman rather than the two men originally believed to have committed the murder.
They focused their attention on Lazarus, who joined the LAPD two years before the killing and was never considered a suspect. A pair of detectives recently followed Lazarus while she ran errands waiting for her to discard something with her saliva on it. Her DNA reportedly matched samples found at the crime scene.
Prosecuting a killing that occurred more than 20 years ago presents many challenges - witnesses may be difficult to locate and DNA samples may have been compromised. A skilled California defense lawyer has the skills to fight any criminal offense, up to and including murder.
If you’re charged with a criminal offense, a skilled California defense lawyer from The Kavinoky Law Firm has the experience needed to fight aggressively for your rights. Please contact a knowledgeable California defense lawyer today at 1-877-4-NO-CUFFS for a free consultation.

A judge ruled today that a leaked photo of battered pop star Rihanna has no bearing on the assault charge against her boyfriend, R&B singer Chris Brown.
Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg denied a motion by Brown’s attorney that sought records of the internal LAPD probe into the leak of the photo. Although Schnegg said the leak was ‘not a good thing’ and may be a criminal matter, she said it wasn’t relevant to the singer’s preliminary hearing on June 22.

A judge has postponed until July the sentencing of a Missouri woman who was convicted in Los Angeles of improperly using a computer to make a fake MySpace profile that led to a teenage girl’s suicide.
U.S. District Court Judge George H. Wu said he needed additional time to consider a defense motion to dismiss the case altogether. In delaying the sentencing, Wu implied that prosecutors’ may have overstepped their bounds by filing a case halfway across the country.
Lori Drew, 50, was convicted of three misdemeanor computer charges, but the jury deadlocked on a felony conspiracy count that carried up to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors said Drew created a MySpace profile for a fictitious boy and used it to “dump” her daughter’s 13-year-old former friend. The girl, Megan Meier, killed herself.
When prosecutors use novel approaches to pursue criminal charges, the case sometimes suffers. In some cases all it takes is a well-planned motion from the defense to derail the prosecutor’s case. A top California defense lawyer from The Kavinoky Law Firm has the skills needed to aggressively attack a prosecutor’s case.
